Shimmy is one of the dearest and sweetest jennets we own. We purchased her sight unseen and have loved her from the minute we first saw her get off the transport truck. Her demure stature and her stocky body type are rare. When we decided to breed her we made sure that we used our smallest jack, Pepper, to be the one to service this little jennet. Now we know it was definitely the RIGHT choice.

As always we were waiting with baited breath for Shimmy to have her very first foal. Being such a tiny little jennet, we were on constant vigil for any of the first signs of labor. It was a good thing we did that and we were with her the instant she went into labor. As you may have seen, if watching Mare Stare, Shimmy had a “red bag” delivery. That is something a breeder always dreads to see or hear for that matter, but with quick action by Joe, he was able to quickly cut open the bag and get this precious little boy jack out.

Since the date was 10/4/10, my good friend, Dena, suggested naming him Ten-Four and calling him Roger. We did exactly that….it fit him perfectly that night and does to this day. Roger is the smallest foal we have ever had at Half Ass Acres. He weighed 15.5 pounds and stood only 17.5 inches tall (short). He was like holding a tiny stuffed doll and he immediately owned our hearts. We did not let him out of the barn for several days since he was so small. Shimmy was such a fantastic first time mother and really wanted to keep him all to herself right after she gave birth to him. I can understand why……”I still want to keep him all to myself.”

Enough time has passed now that we are letting Shimmy and Ten-Four have more access to the paddocks but still keep a watchful eye out for both of them due to their smallness in size. Ten-Four’s risky birth situation did not have one bad effect on him. He is as normal as “apple pie” and JUST AS SWEET! There are no written or spoken words to describe him to you. It takes seeing him in person to appreciate his “cute factor”.

We Praise the Lord for sending him to us, for Joe’s quick response to his birthing needs, and simply for the Miracle of Birth at Half Ass Acres. Please call to set an appointment to visit our tiny little treasure. You will definitely agree he’s exceptional.

Below is a link to an instructional video taken of a red bag delivery. It gives a great visual of what it looks like and how to handle the situation.

Permission was given by owner to post. Their filly is doing great.

Update! 6/3/11: Roger was gelded by our vet, Dr. Greg Harris! He is now our ambassador/mascot donkey for Half Ass Acres! Even though Roger is the smallest donkey on our farm we made the decision to geld him as he 'toes out' on his front legs and we did not want to perpetuate that conformational fault into the gene pool of miniature donkeys.  We have turned down thousands of dollars for little Roger. Roger is here to stay!!

Soldier is super friendly and loves nothing better than a good party or festivity. We have taken him to many outdoor occasions so he is use to crowds and noise. Children are drawn to his bold, white face and quiet, tolerant demeanor. He seems to be especially fond of children too, allowing them to pull him in any direction they wish to go. He is easy to catch, and he leads and loads in the trailer well.

Soldier is a masked spot with an apron face. An apron face is similar to the bald face, except an apron face literally looks like he's wearing an apron of white over the color and the white extends along the jaw to the throat latch & generally covers the whole muzzle. He has dark eyeliner all the way around both eyes.

Thank you to Dena Wilson for her incredible job of handling Soldier during his photo shoot! Thanks Dena, you are one in a million!

Update! How could we part with Roger's best friend? Just could not do it. Soldier is here to stay too!

Mookie is a half brother to Stonegate Acres Solar Eclipse, a National High Point Perfomance Gelding and the 2005 NMDA High Point Gelding of the Year owned and shown by Kathy Loudamy at K & K Ranch in Texas. Mookie has a beautiful head and is a great little driving gelding. He is a beautiful mover and can really extend his trot. He isn't like a lot of driving donkeys that just go faster instead of truly extending their trot. He was trained by Wayne Lyon at Stonegate Acres in Canada and shown very briefly  in 2009 by Kathy Loudamy at K&K Ranch. He was Reserve Champion Halter Gelding at the Texas Shoot Out in Bryan, Texas in June 2009. He is now owned and shown by our great niece, Emily, in youth events.  They attended three shows for the 2011 show season and did quite well together as a team. Watch for them on the 2012 show circuit!

I had to have another gelding since my great niece, Emily, took over ownership of my Mookie Man. It was a hard decision but we finally decided on Howington since he previously belonged to me as a weanling and I was familiar with his personality and luckily he was offered for sale. He has a wonderful show record in halter and color with his prior owners. We think Howington is a fine little show gelding and we will be training him for performance classes for when he turns three during the 2012 show season. A big 'Thank You!' to Dana Rathbun of Castlewood Farms for allowing us to purchase Howington. They had a great 2011 show season together!

Since Dena (Rocking 615 Ranch) and I (Half Ass Acres) show together we decided it is in our best interest to come up with a plan where neither of us loses to the other. We now each own a donkey with the other person's farm name. So no matter who places ahead of the other...we would both be winners in our eyes. We both have a competitive nature and there is no sense putting a strain on our beautiful relationship. How would I get my photos taken of all my donkeys that Dena handles?? Yikes!!

Look for Howington, Lightfoot,  Mookie, Caddie, Roller, Dena, Emily, Will and me on the 2012 show circuit!  We will be the ones having ALL the fun - win or lose!!

Following is a list of Howington's show winnings:

The fireworks started going off in our neighborhood the second he was born. It was surreal! Lightfoot is owned by my best friend and right hand man, Dena Wilson. We show together as a team so I wanted to post Lightfoot's photos and accomplishments on our web page.  We are very proud of how well Lightfoot and Dena have performed in their first season of showing together. Lightfoot was trained by Dena Wilson only. Look for them again in the 2012 show season!

Caddie is our newest addition and he came all the way from Texas.  He just arrived on January 4th, 2012.  We purchased Caddie from Mike & Loydene Brown of North Gate Farm.  Cadillac Jack was trained and shown for many years by Cal Getz of Cal Getz Training in Joshua, Texas. He has been shown by youths and adults all over the country throughout his career. His winnings are too numerous to mention but he was the Southwestern Donkey and Mule Socity High Point Donkey of 2004. When the Brown's called us to tell us he was available we jumped at the chance to own him.  He will be our catch youth donkey for my great nephew, Will, if he decides to show this year. He will have his choice between Caddie or Roller. But we plan to have a lot of fun with Caddie no matter whether we show him or not. You just can't own to many geldings especially when they are as nice as Cadillac Jack.

Click MDR sticker to see Miniature Donkey Registry Pedigree Roller's complete pedigree! (Coming Soon!)

We have wanted to own Roller for many years...even before he was born we tried to purchase his dam, Lottie, but Kathy Loudamy beat us to her.  We have admired Roller's sire, FOF Cardinal RG, and grand sire, My World Winston, for many years and we think they are two of the finest red herd sires in the country with their wide chests and stocky builds.  We have Roller's grand dam, Sunset Acres Lady Slipper, in our own herd now and she is one of our very favorite brood jennets. Slipper's daughter and Roller's half sister, FOF Pink Nitie, is also in our herd and will be old enough to breed soon.

Roller was bred, trained and raised by Kathy Loudamy of K&K Ranch in Texas. Maria and Katie Randall of Little Miracles Farm in Tennessee finished his training and have him well started under harness.   Roller helped Katie win high point or reserve high point youth for several years in The Tennessee Donkey ASSociation's Year End High Point Awards with very limited showing.

We are sure we are going to have a lot of fun showing and playing with Roller. We are hoping that my great nephew, Will, will show him for us this year. Stay tuned for photos and videos that will be posted as soon as Roller arrives at Half Ass Acres. He is scheduled to be picked up next Friday (2/3/12) and if the weather is good we will be photographing him the next day. A big thank you to Katie Randall for allowing us to purchase Roller. Katie has graduated to a new youth donkey with more fire and 'get up and go' to continue her youth career. We wish you all the best luck, Katie! Thank you again for letting Roller come to live with us at Half Ass Acres.

Update! Roller has arrived but we have no sun this week. We wil photograph him as soon as the sun comes back out. Roller is a little dandy!!
