Half Ass Acres on September 5th, 2004

Stocks to wash, clip, trim hooves, etc...they work great! A retirement present to Joe & me from ME....so I can do hooves by myself while Joe is at work.

The side bars adjust up/down and tighten to height desired. This is Half Ass Acres Valient Diego...a 34½" Wayne Lyon trained gelding and NO, he is not in foal!! I don't think???

Working Stocks

The stocks come with the butt chain and front chain wrapped in heavy plastic with quick release snaps. I added my own trailer ties on each side to hook to the halter..plus I tied them to the ladder on the wall but it really was not necessary.

Working Stocks

There is a grated floor so they hold the stocks down themselves! We have a big huge fan blowing on it at all times..can't live without that in this heat...it is out of view too...it is in the right front corner of the barn blowing towards us....and big huge lights that are on the top of the side wall that we plug in while we are doing work that requires a lot of light. I was going to hang a bucket off of the ladder and let them eat but the bucket would not hang quite right...might try to figure out how to fix that later. It was too low on one ring that I tried and too high on the next one up.

This is Windcrest Checkmate...Checkers is 1 1/2 years old and measured 31¾" today. We are going to sell him because we bought Primero..same breeding only older but I am dragging my feet about it because he is so sweet and Spec's best friend. He is registered as dark brown and white but when I clipped his bridle path and tail today it was so dark it looked black!

You can move the chain in one of three sets of hooks to make it a tighter fit. And I just realized I have them in their backwards..LOL!! but either direction works just fine!! Oh...there is the fan in this photo!..the bright lites are just above the fan in the middle of this photo..pointing down on the middle of the donkey. These stocks are very mobile and I can easily move them by myself.

Ass-Pirin Acres Spectacular is patiently waiting his turn.

Could he be any dirtier???? Spec was one year old on August 31st and he measured 30¼" today. We love him!!

Stocks we had made but never used because they need to be concreted in the ground or a floor made for them.

Working Stocks

They have spikes that go down in the ground on all four corners

Working Stocks

This is the front..it has a place you can drop a board down like a stockade gate. I paid $450 to have these stocks made but I never used them because they need to be concreted in the ground or a floor made for it so the donkeys can't move it. I am going to sell them for $300. We never could decide where we wanted them permanently so we never fixed them! What I like about the new ones is that I can move them by myself to where ever I need to use them.

Working Stocks

The back has a gate that opens and shuts with a pin you drop down in to hold it shut. These stocks are very heavy...made out of iron.

Here is Joe putting the finishing touches on the first jack pen we built a few months ago.The barn has a fan in it on a timer.

Finishing Touches on the first jack paddock

Here is the new jack pen we are starting that is going to be nicer than the first one.

New Jack Paddock in progress

This barn is going to have two windows in it so it will be cooler in the summertime. Will be able to be closed to stop drafts in the winter time. We have boards around the complete bottom so it will be filled with quarterdown like the first one. This takes care of all mud problems and makes it so easy to clean up poop! A great place for a maternity ward to put the jennets in off of the fescue before foaling too. We are not quite ready to have the quarterdown delivered yet.

New Jack Paddock in progress

If you want to see more photos of how we used quarterdown click on this link!!This is how we spent today! I love the stocks..they work great...it might be difficult for me to get some of the larger donkeys in them by myself but I can manage by tying a rope to the ladder on the wall in front of them and pushing them from behind. The donkeys we did today pretty much just walked right in except for Checkers who was afraid and I just pushed while Joe pulled..he was fine once he was inside. No one we did today was the least bit frightened while they were in the stocks. No more strained backs trying to hold donkey legs while they jump around!
